Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
How many people do you help each weekday?
We help 1,200 New Yorkers with a hot, nutritious meal, and access to Counseling and Referral (C&R) services.
Where does your food come from?
We purchase 75% of all food wholesale, which includes farms in upstate New York. The rest is donated by federal and city programs such as City Harvest, Food for Survival, and the New York City Human Resources Association, as well as individuals.
What does running the Soup Kitchen cost?
It currently costs $2.2 million dollars a year to run the Soup Kitchen.
Where do you get your money?
Typically, about 50% of our monies come from individuals who are concerned about poverty in New York City. The rest comes from foundations, government, corporations and churches.
What do you do other than serve meals?
We provide counseling and referral services, host on-site legal and health services, run a writers’ workshop, and, of course, advocate on behalf of those we serve.
How big is your staff?
We have 13 full-time and 4 part-time employees, and many serve both the church and the soup kitchen simultaneously.
Do you use volunteers?
Yes, 55-60 volunteer each day and are the lifeblood of our program. As well as individuals, groups come from schools, corporations and churches.

Can I support your work?
Yes. Every donation – large or small – helps us meet the need.

Why do your mailings ask that I send my donation to a NJ address if the Soup Kitchen is in NY?
Donations are opened, recorded, and deposited in New Jersey by a company that provides these services to many non-profit groups. As our small staff would be overwhelmed, using this service allows us to spend more of your contribution on feeding people. Donations sent to New Jersey or to our New York address will reach us just the same. We thank you for your support.
